FLOW CONTROL / Pharmaceutical industries

Pharmaceutical industries.

Pharmaceutical sites combine general utilities and chemical batch operations with separately qualified hygienic systems. Define the service boundary before choosing a valve.

ILLUSTRATIVE UTILITY AND PROCESS CONTEXT

Different duties.
Different demands.

Start by identifying what the valve contacts. General plant utilities and compatible chemical batches can be reviewed against industrial catalogue options. Product-contact, Water for Injection (WFI), pure-steam and sterile systems need separately documented hygienic construction and qualification; a stainless-steel body alone does not establish suitability.

DUTY / 01

General plant utilities

Cooling water, indirect temperature-control circuits and general plant steam should be specified separately from high-purity systems. Review ball or globe isolation options against the medium and exact pressure-temperature rating, including startup and cleaning conditions.

DUTY / 02

Compatible chemical batch lines

For chemical charging or transfer, share the full composition and concentration of the medium. A lined ball valve is a catalogue option to discuss where its liner, seats and operating limits match the duty. A lining material does not by itself establish hygienic or product-contact qualification.

DUTY / 03

Automated utility isolation

Pneumatic isolation can be reviewed for defined switching duties. Specify the air supply, cycle rate, required failure position and open/closed feedback. Confirm the supplied accessories and control interfaces; automation alone does not validate a production process.

SELECTION / LOOK BEYOND LINE SIZE

What the process
asks of the valve.

01

Utilities and high-purity systems look similar

Similar connections or materials can conceal different qualification needs. Mark the service as general utility, chemical batch, pure steam, WFI or product-contact before reviewing catalogue options.

02

Cleaning reaches the whole assembly

Cleaning and sterilisation cycles introduce their own chemicals, temperatures and design requirements. Specify cleanability, drainability and any permitted retained volume rather than relying on the body material alone.

03

Documentation arrives too late

State the required material traceability, surface-finish evidence, seal documentation and inspection records at enquiry stage. Availability must be confirmed for the exact offered model and configuration.

Materials and operation.
The complete assembly.

Body, trim, seals and actuation need to work together under your service conditions.

Review more than stainless steel

Body alloy, internal geometry, wetted finish, seats and seals all matter. Confirm the complete construction against the project specification; a catalogue alloy option is not evidence of sanitary approval.

Treat the liner as part of the specification

Confirm liner and seat compatibility at the actual concentration and temperature, including cleaning media and any vacuum condition. Do not treat a generic lined valve as universally compatible.

Qualify high-purity duties separately

Pure-steam, WFI and product-contact service may require dedicated hygienic components and documented validation evidence. The industrial products shown here are not presented as prequalified pharmaceutical assemblies.

Questions worth discussing for your pharmaceutical industries application.

Ask our team
Further technical reading
Can an industrial stainless-steel valve be used in a pharmaceutical plant?

Possibly for a defined general utility or compatible industrial process duty, after application review. Hygienic or aseptic service needs construction and documentation that meet the specific project requirements.

Are these catalogue valves approved for WFI or pure steam?

That approval is not established by the supplied catalogue. Send the high-purity specification so the required design, material evidence and qualification can be reviewed before an assembly is offered.

What should I include for an automated batch-line enquiry?

Describe the medium and service boundary, then include the switching sequence, air supply, required failure position and feedback. Add any cleaning cycle and documentation requirements for the exact assembly.
