FLOW CONTROL / Sugar industries

Sugar industries.

From juice handling to evaporation, a sugar plant combines solids-bearing process streams with steam and water utilities. Match isolation to the actual stream and operating cycle.

Different duties.
Different demands.

Juice extraction, clarification, evaporation and crystallisation create different isolation duties. Fibres and deposits change the process-line requirement, while plant steam, condensate and cooling water need their own rated assemblies. The products below are starting points for application review against the supplied catalogue.

DUTY / 01

Juice and solids-bearing isolation

For a stream carrying fibres or suspended solids, discuss a knife gate configuration. Include solids content, flow direction and the shut-off requirement so the seat, gate and operating force can be reviewed together. A valve-family match alone does not confirm performance in concentrated juice or massecuite.

DUTY / 02

Steam and condensate isolation

Steam supports heating and evaporation; condensate belongs to a separate return duty. Review a piston valve for general plant isolation only after confirming its exact rating, seals, connection and installation conditions. Steam control and condensate drainage require their own system components.

DUTY / 03

Water and compatible liquid services

Cooling and process-water lines can be reviewed separately from sugar-contact pipework. Butterfly or ball valve options depend on the medium, line dimensions and sealing requirement. For sugar-bearing liquids, include the cleaning method and possible deposits when considering the internal flow path.

SELECTION / LOOK BEYOND LINE SIZE

What the process
asks of the valve.

01

Buildup around the seat

Sugar deposits or crystals can interfere with movement and sealing. Describe where buildup occurs and how the line is cleaned; confirm any flushing provision in the offered design rather than assuming it is standard.

02

A changing stream

Juice, syrup, mud and water have different solids and viscosity. Give the actual process stage and normal operating conditions instead of specifying a single valve for every sugar-plant line.

03

Steam-system coordination

An isolation valve does not replace pressure control or condensate management. Include the surrounding equipment and shutdown sequence when describing a heating or evaporation utility.

Materials and operation.
The complete assembly.

Body, trim, seals and actuation need to work together under your service conditions.

Check the complete wetted assembly

Confirm body, gate or disc, seats, seals and packing against the medium and cleaning chemicals. Food-contact requirements must be stated and supported for the exact assembly being offered.

Confirm thermal limits

A water-duty seat is not automatically suitable for hot syrup or steam. Ask for the pressure-temperature rating and seal selection for the proposed configuration.

Specify serviceable details

Include operating frequency, actuator clearance and expected maintenance access. Request confirmation of spare-seat, seal and packing availability for the selected model.

Questions worth discussing for your sugar industries application.

Ask our team
Further technical reading
Does one valve type cover every stage of sugar production?

No. Describe each line as juice, syrup, solids-bearing process fluid, steam, condensate or water. The team can then review catalogue options against that specific duty.

Can a knife gate be used for juice containing fibres?

It is an option to review, not an automatic selection. Share fibre and solids content, differential pressure, flow direction and sealing needs so the precise configuration can be assessed.

What should I send when replacing a sugar-plant valve?

Send the nameplate, connection measurements and photographs, plus the medium and operating conditions. Explain whether the issue is leakage, difficult movement, deposits or access so the enquiry addresses the actual problem.
